20 Years of HYB | Takeaways with the Malays

As we end 2024, we close out the 20th year of How You Brewin, so take a look below at some thoughts and reflections of the Malays over the last 20 years! 

What has been your favorite part of the last 20 years of HYB?

Lori: It's definitely been meeting all customers.
Dan: Being involved in the lives of our staff has been my favorite part.

What is the biggest lesson in business that you learned?

Lori: Branding is everything!
Dan: To pick a lane that is uniquely distinguishable and go deep in it.

What is the coolest thing that HYB has allowed you to be a part of in the last 20 years?

Lori: The coffee industry…it's fun, social, and community-centric. It's so cool!
Dan: The growth of the brand has increased influence, allowing us to be knitted to our community, lead our staff, and collaboratively come alongside other entrepreneurs. We’ve met, helped, and learned from so many special people and look forward to more of that.

Do you have a favorite year of business?

Lori: Every year has been different and gets better and better each year.
Dan: I agree with Lori, though our expansion in 2019 definitely stands out as a good year.

What have you learned about each other?

Lori: Our strengths and weaknesses. I'm all operations, and he’s books. I've also learned that he doesn't say "no" to people who ask of his time.
Dan: Working with my wife is deeply rewarding. We are good at and passionate about different things, which makes this all possible.

What do the next 20 years look like?

Lori: We would love to continue involving our staff in new endeavors, you never know what's next with them. 
Dan: I see the next 20 years walking through the open doors God puts before us and paying attention to when they close. The open doors are new opportunities and the ones that close are learning lessons that prepare us for the open ones. We will also pursue more retail locations, targeting places like Beach Haven, Manahawkin, and wherever our staff wants to go out and lead a place. Expanding wholesale (cold brew and beans) and e-commerce are also in our future plans.
