The Top 3 Health Benefits of Cold Brew You Probably Didn't Know About

In recent years, cold brew has taken the coffee industry by storm. So popular is this artisan beverage, that it’s graduated from brick-and-mortar coffee shops to restaurants, grocery stores and even home refrigerators. Coffee aficionados can access the drink almost anywhere.

So what exactly is this cold brew we speak of? While traditional iced coffee is brewed with near-boiling water, cold brew is made with cooler, room temperature water. Coarse grounds are steeped for 12-24 hours and the resulting concentrate is filtered, given a dose of water and served cold. The resulting libation is a smoother alternative to traditional iced coffee. As if you needed another reason to justify your cold brew addiction, here are some subtle health benefits linked to the trending coffee beverage that most people don’t know about!

1. It’s Less Acidic

Coffee beans contain soluble chemicals like acids and oils. When coffee is extracted using hot water, the heat extracts these acidic solubles from the grounds and gives the resulting beverage a pronounced taste. This taste can leave some coffee drinkers (especially those with sensitive stomachs) feeling bloated and nauseous. Other symptoms can include acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion.

Cold brew, on the other hand, is much less likely to provoke those uncomfortable side effects. During the cold brewing process, the cool water that soaks the grounds doesn’t draw out acidic solubles. That’s why cold brew has a much smoother flavor profile than conventional drip coffee - and consumers can enjoy the beverage sans discomfort.

2. It Contains Antioxidants

Experts have shown that coffee beverages contain powerful, disease-fighting antioxidants - and cold brew is no exception. The numerous antioxidants present in coffee beans can help prevent serious ailments like heart disease, Alzheimer's and cancer. They have also been associated with weight loss, improved cognitive function and blood sugar reduction. In short, cold brew could add years onto your life!

3. It Negates the Need for Additives

Gone are the days of adding “coffee to your cream” or “coffee to your sugar.” The natural sweet notes of cold brew will stop you from dumping loads of high-calorie sweetening agents into your mugs!
